Model Answer:
The map depicts the approximate number of refugees who had left Afghanistan by November 16th 2001. It also shows the three main refugee camps in Pakistan, which are all relatively close to the troubled country.

Around 3,525,700 people had fled war-torn Afghanistan to neighbouring countries by the said date according to the data presented. By far the largest receivers were Pakistan and Iran, with an influx of 2 million and 1.5 million refugees respectively. In response to the massive increase of displaced Afghani’s, Pakistan set-up three camps, one in Jalozai in the north-west, plus others in Killi Faizo and Roghani in the south-west near the Afghan border. Iran received 1.5 million refugees as the war-stricken population moved westwards.

Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, all to the north of Afghanistan had smaller numbers of entrants into their countries. Of these three countries, Tajikistan had the largest number of refugees crossing their border at 15,400, while 8,800 people entered into Uzbekistan, and approximately 1,500 refugees were received by Turkmenistan.
